Most climbers underestimate how much time acclimatization actually takes, and most itineraries sold online underestimate it too. A realistic acclimatization schedule isn't about ticking off a fixed number of days — it's about giving your body the repeated exposure it needs to adjust, at a pace it can actually handle.
Rushing this stage is the single most common reason strong, fit climbers fail to summit, or worse, need to be evacuated.
A few things every climber should understand before booking:
"Climb high, sleep low" isn't a slogan, it's the whole method. The core principle of acclimatization is ascending to a higher altitude during the day and returning to sleep at a lower one. This is what actually trains your body to adapt, far more than simply spending nights at increasing altitudes. A schedule that skips this rotation to save days is skipping the part that actually works.
Rest days are not wasted days. Many climbers see a scheduled rest day and feel they're losing progress. In reality, this is when your body is doing the adaptation work. Cutting a rest day to keep to a tighter itinerary is one of the most common — and most preventable — mistakes I see.
Your fitness level does not predict how you'll acclimatize. This surprises a lot of strong climbers. Altitude sickness has little to do with cardiovascular fitness and a lot to do with individual physiology and how strictly the ascent rate is followed. I've guided very fit climbers who struggled and less conventionally fit climbers who acclimatized well, simply because they respected the pace.
A realistic schedule allows buffer days, not just climbing days. Weather delays, individual pacing differences, and unexpected symptoms all need room in the itinerary. A schedule with zero flexibility built in is a schedule that pressures people to push through symptoms they shouldn't ignore.
A few practical notes: watch for early symptoms — headache, loss of appetite, or disturbed sleep — and treat them as information, not an inconvenience to push through. Staying properly hydrated and avoiding alcohol during the ascent phase makes a measurable difference. And above roughly 3,000m, most well-designed schedules limit net altitude gain per sleeping night to a few hundred meters, with periodic extra nights built in as elevation increases — your guide should be able to explain exactly why the schedule is shaped the way it is, not just tell you to follow it.
